About Rajkot is a city of the Indian state, Gujarat.  Rajkot was once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtraa.  It was also the headquarters of the British Government.  Rajkot is basically famous for its jewellery market.  It is a self-made industrial city boasting of being the largest diesel engines, manufacturing centre, and also being the largest gold producing centre in India.

Rajkot is located at 22.3°Nand 70.78° E.  It has an average elevation of 134m (439 ft).  The city is spread in an area of about 104.86 sq. km.

Climate

The average maximum temperature is around 43.50°C, and the minimum being 24.20°C.  The average rainfall is about 500mm.  There are mainly three seasons observed here in different months of a year as winter (October to February), summer (March to June) and monsoon (July to September).

History

Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of the Jadeja clan founded the city of Rajkot in 1612.  Vibhaji was the grandson of the Jam Sataji of Nawanagar, presently called as Jamnagar.  During the British Rule, it was a regional headquarter.  After Independence, Rajkot became a part of the bilingual Bombay State.

Race Course

This is a large garden located in the heart of the city.  It accommodates various places of interest like Balbhavan, Children Traffic Park, Fun World, etc.  The Race Course also has various sports facilities like an Olympic standard indoor stadium international quality cricket ground, football, hockey and volleyball grounds, as gym, swimming pool, etc.  The Race Course is also famous for the beautiful gardens named as a Love Gardens.

Ramakrishna Ashram

This temple was built in 1934 on the land donated by Late Shri Dharmendrasinhji, the then king of the state of Morbi.  It is situated on the Dr.  Yagnki road of Rajkot, and is second most important place for the followers of Swami Vivekananda after Kolkata.

Watson Museum

Located in the Jubilee Gardens, the museum commemorating Colonel John Watson is a good introduction to Saurashtra's cultural heritage.  The important exhibits include copies of artifacts from Mohenjodaro, the 13th century carvings, silverware, natural history exhibits and textiles.  A huge 19th century marble statue of Queen Victoria is simply fascinating.

Mukti Dhama

This is an electric crematorium located in the Ramnath para area.  It is run and maintained by an NGO under the grant of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation.  It has a number of small temples, prayer halls, library and a beautiful garden displaying historical events, which attract a number of people.
